. “What unites us all [Christians] despite our serious differences, is scripture,
the first six ecumenical councils, and
the collective works of C.S. Lewis.”*
* The quote is from Fr. Joe Fessio, as quoted by Peter Kreeft,
a C.S. Lewis scholar.

C.S. Lewis:
Discussion Groups
~
“I have heard of Mere Christianity, and I would love to
participate in a discussion group to become more familiar with C.S. Lewis’s
life and work.” ~
“I have read most of C.S. Lewis’s work and re-read most of it this summer!
It’s good to have a place to share about Lewis.” Interest about the life and works of C.S. Lewis is high
among students, especially now, in anticipation of the release of the first film
of the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the
Witch and the Wardrobe, which will show in movie theaters in December. We are excited to be exploring C.S. Lewis with several groups this fall at University of Miami and Florida International University. In addition to our discussions on Mere Christianity, we are exploring Lewis’s life as a model scholar. His well-articulated faith and his public and unashamed witness was costly. But he had a burden of glory when it came to the gospel. Lewis’s voice reaches us as one of a friend who has been in the presence of God and has emerged bearing gifts for God’s people. To read Lewis is an unforgettable experience and nothing can be better than to share it with friends. “Oxford
dons objected to Lewis, not for becoming a Christian, but for advertising the
fact… Unspoken rules of academic decorum required one to be decently secretive
about religious convictions. “Myth, Magic, and Mere Christianity” Lecture

New
news about Marlene After working on-and-off for almost seventeen years in this ministry, Marlene has been invited by InterVarsity’s GFM to join staff. She is now fully integrated in all aspects of the ministry -- though her position is only part-time. She comes with a desire to motivate students to build a firm foundation for their lives. We now have two children in college (and one to begin next year) who have developed lives of deep devotion and thoughtful reflection. In a way, she is just going to the next level of building lives – and her qualifications so far are solid! As a family, we are very excited about this move for Marlene, which has happened a little sooner than expected. We are looking forward to the new possibilities in ministry that our partnership brings. More on Marlene’s work soon!

But he is also exploring another, more important, concept: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God….” (John 1:1). James attends a Bible study on John and eagerly soaks in every word of the text and the discussions. “I have a lot of questions about Christianity,” he says. But by the way he

Leah, though pressed with her academic load, explores the Bible between classes. Recently while studying a passage of scripture, she exclaimed, “This is the best thing I’ve done all day!” Leah is on the verge of becoming a Christian; she is also beginning to attend church. This semester there are three
Asian Investigative Bible Studies: one at UM and two at FIU. This is the first
year UM has a GFM Bible study for Asian scholars. We are very excited that God
has touched faculty members on both campuses to join in this witness. Despite
being denied the knowledge of the Gospel in their own culture, these students have
been prepared by the Spirit to hear, understand, and respond with unusual
enthusiasm. ¨
Law
Student Ministry The law student
group at UM continues to grow steadily. It has doubled since last year, but we
would like to see it continue to grow both in number and in purpose. The Christian
Legal Society (CLS)
annual conference takes place in Naples, Florida this year. CLS,
now in partnership with Graduate and Faculty Ministries
nationally, is awarding scholar-ships to students and staff to attend this year.
We will be there along with other GFM staff and students. We hope that this will
be a significant time of encouragement and a time of strategic exploration for
other CLS chapters at other local
universities. Pray that we will hear God clearly and receive his empowering
grace to take the law student ministry in South Florida to the next level.

We are thankful to God for the door he
has opened to us in ministry. We
pray that you will see yourself as a partner in this work through your prayers and support, being
sure of the reward that comes with the obedience to his calling. We believe that God is poised to
do great things, if
we persevere in our calling. We can do it together. |
